This past weekend, we had a family gathering.  Mimi decided she wanted to play a game of BINGO.  She broke out the BINGO rolling machine, passed out BINGO cards, and some markers that she dug out of a drawer.  I helped her gather some fun prizes, too, like an unopened package of Skittles, a brand new meat thermometer, and a pair of nice binoculars that she wanted to re-gift.  She also threw in a $20 bill at the end for the last round.  Not only was the game itself a blast, but everyone loved seeing what the winner would receive as their award.  Mimi just sat back and giggled at everyone’s reaction.  This simple game was fun for the whole family.

Board games are always fun, too, but you might consider puzzles and games that are learning based, as well.  Of course, the most well-known game of strategy is the game of Chess, followed by Checkers and Battleship.  Strategy games and mind games are beginning to be somewhat forgotten or just put to the side, therefore, it is important to introduce them to your kids and hope that they will enjoy them as you did.

For those of you that enjoy history, here is a little lesson in board games…Image result for board game clipart

The First Board Game

(5000 BC)

Did you know that board games are pre-historic?  This means we had board games before we had written a language. So, what was the very first game?. Dice! The simple piece used in most board games today was a basic in our oldest games.

A set of 49 stones were found at a 5,000-year-old burial mound in southeast Turkey. These are the earliest game pieces ever found. Pieces similar to this have been found in both Syria and Iraq. This could mean that board games originated in the Fertile Crescent. Wow!  The same region that invented booze, papyrus, breath mints, and calendars, which are also considerations when planning your game night!

Early Dice Image result for dice clipart

toysEarly on, dice games were created by painting one side of flat sticks. These sticks would be tossed, and the number showing on the painted sides showing would be your “roll”. Mesopotamian dice were made from a variation of materials, including carved knuckle bones, wood, painted stones, and even turtle shells.

Board Games Become a Royal Pastime

(3100 BC)

Board games were also popular among Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt. Studies show that they primarily enjoyed the game of Senet. This game has been found in predynastic and First Dynasty burial sites. Senet is visible in several Ancient Egyptian tombs around the time of the New Kingdom in Egypt (1550–1077 BC).

Ancient Egyptians were strong believers in the concept of fate. The  element of luck in the game of Senet was strongly tied to this concept. Believing a successful player was under the protection of the major gods of the national pantheon: Ra, Thoth, and sometimes Osiris. For this reason, Senet boards were often placed in the grave alongside other useful objects for the dangerous journey through the afterlife. The game is even referred to in Chapter XVII of the Book of the Dead.

As far as rules of the game, there is some debate. The Senet board has a grid of 30 squares, arranged in three rows of ten. There are two sets of pawns. Historians have made educated guesses for the actual rules of gameplay for Senet, which have been adopted by different companies which make sets for sale today.

The Landlord’s Game

(1903)

What? You’ve never heard of The Landlord’s Game? This game was invented by Lizzie Magie, one of America’s very first board game designers. The game board consisted of a square track and with a row of properties around the outside that players could buy. The game board had four railroads, two utilities, a jail, and a corner named “Labor Upon Mother Earth Produces Wages,” which earned players $100 each time they passed it… Sound familiar?

Magie had invented and patented The Landlord’s Game in 1904.  She intended for the game to be a practical demonstration of land grabbing with all its usual outcomes and consequences. She based the game on the economic principles of Georgism, a system proposed by Henry George.  The object was to demonstrate how rents enrich property owners, while at the same time, can also impoverish tenants.

She knew in real life, some people could find the process difficult to understand. She thought that if the ideas Georgism were put into the concrete form of a game, they might be easier to understand. Magie also hoped that when children played the game, it would provoke their natural suspicion of unfairness, and that they might carry this awareness into adulthood. Talk about some great teaching!Image result for monopoly clipart

Monopoly

In 1935 Magie sold her patent for The Landlords Game to Parker Brothers.  We now know it as Monopoly. This game launched Parker Brothers to a massive success, although it was originally rejected by them.

Parker Brothers later created other big hits like Trivial Pursuit, Clue, and more.

Can you believe Lizzie Magie sold her original patent of the original game for $500?

Table Top on Television

TableTop started out as a show on a Geek and Sundry Youtube Channel.  It quickly became a very popular series. The original concept for Tabletop was that Wil Wheaton (an avid board gamer) would review board games.  Wil, however, proposed that the best way to show how great games are is to actually play them. Looking at their success, it appears they nailed it.

As a result, Tabletop wanted to become independent.  They decided to start a crowdfunding campaign in an effort to make this possible. Their goal was $500,000 and they nearly tripled that. Therefore, they recently announced they would use the extra proceeds to launch a similar web series titled “Titan’s Grave: The Ashes of Vulcan”.

Titan’s Grave is a multi-episode show that focuses on a single role-playing board game. Geek & Sundry also teamed up with Green Ronin Publishing (creators of several RPG titles, including Dragon Age) to create a new game engine that they will be using to power their RPG game.

Table Top Games

TableTop has become a true force in the gaming community. They focus on introducing gaming to people who still have a misguided view of board gaming. A lot of people still think of Monopoly and Clue when they think of board games. TableTop’s popularity is changing this mindset. The show caused the featured board games to skyrocket in sales. Tsuro was featured on the show, and the publisher exhausted all stock reserves, and the demand was very high. The game was unavailable in Europe for a period of time while production tried to cope with US demand. Game manufacturers have dubbed this “The Wheaton Effect”.

Youtube

So, what does a popular Youtube channel have to do with a yearly worldwide event? In 2013, Wil and Felicia held International Tabletop Day.  They played several games live with folks from previous episodes. The very next year, the event had spiraled into a worldwide celebration and with events in over 80 countries. A lot of game stores from all over the world are announcing various events and promotions for their participation. Because of this, Board gaming has officially become a worldwide holiday.
